Sydney

Sydney, Australia’s gateway city and the capital of the state of New South Wales is built around one of the largest, most beautiful harbours in the world and along miles of golden surfing beaches which stretch north and south of the city on the shore of the Pacific Ocean. The beaches and harbour play a major role in the cultural and leisure lives of Sydneysiders – yachting, surfing, sailboarding, kit-surfing, swimming, walking, boating and fishing are all popular activities.

Many national parks and protected areas of natural bushland surround the city and the beautiful Blue Mountains are an easy journey on public transport to the west.  Perhaps the most famous of Sydney’s landmarks is the spectacular Sydney Opera House with its graceful ‘sails’. The Opera House is just one of Sydney’s cultural centres, offering opera, ballet, drama and film. The historic ‘Rocks’ area, site of the original European settlement, is nearby, and this part of the harbour foreshore is a hub of activity for both local residents and visitors. Always present, and offering a richness that can only develop from 50,000+ years of continuous ownership and custodianship of the land, is the wealth of cultural diversity that indigenous Australian’s contribute to wider Australian society, that visitors to Sydney can explore and experience.

Sydney is a vigorous, cosmopolitan city, a major industrial, business and commercial centre and is endlessly fascinating in its variety and its beauty.

General Information

Arrival into Sydney

Air: If flying into Sydney, you’ll land at the Sydney Airport (Airport code: SYD). Sydney’s central business district is 10km north of the International Airport and takes approximately 20-30 minutes via car.

Direct services are available from a number of international cities.

By taxi and rideshare

By ride share

Request a ride from your preferred rideshare service and get picked up from either the domestic or international terminals. Simply send the request once you’ve exited the terminal, and your driver will meet you at the Priority Pick-up Zone outside of the Domestic and International terminals.

Fares to SYD vary depending on the selected vehicle option, travel time, and total distance. Use the Uber Fare Estimator to get estimated prices.

Ola also provides rideshare services to and from Sydney Airport.

By taxi

Each terminal has its own sheltered taxi rank with supervisors on hand during peak times to ensure a smooth flow of taxis for travellers.

If you need assistance, kerbside supervisors can also organise taxis with baby capsules, wheelchair access, five-seaters and maxi taxis for larger groups or station wagons for large amounts of baggage.

Information for taxi passengers

Drivers are required to accept all fares, small or large, from the airport. The kerbside management team will help you and your driver with this request.

Please note that taxis are not permitted to pick up passengers away from a taxi rank and drivers can be fined AU$5,000 for breaking the regulation.

Accessible taxi facilities

Taxi drivers who need to assist their passengers to the terminal buildings may leave their vehicles at designated pre-booked taxi bays at both the international and domestic terminals. Different procedures apply for drop off and pick-up at each terminal and additional kerbside management officers are on hand to manage the system and assist drivers and passengers. Customers requiring accessible taxis are advised to pre-book where possible.

Due to aviation security requirements, taxi drivers may not leave their vehicles when stopped outside terminal buildings.

Taxi fares

Below are some approximate return fares you can expect to pay to and from Sydney Airport. Remember passengers pay for any bridge or road tolls on top of the fare (these fares are in Australian dollars and are based on non-peak traffic conditions).

Fare estimates:

Sydney City $45-55 (one way)
A $4.75 airport toll is payable by all passengers taking a taxi from any of Sydney Airport’s taxi ranks.

Traveling to Australia

Visas

Under Australia’s universal visa system, all visitors to Australia must have a valid visa to travel to and enter Australia (other than New Zealand passport holders who will normally be granted a Special Category visa on arrival, provided they meet health and character requirements; and permanent residents of Norfolk Island who may be granted a Permanent Resident of Norfolk Island visa on arrival).

There are many visa options available to people wishing to visit Australia. The appropriate visa option will depend, amongst other things, on the person’s purpose for visiting Australia.

Please refer to www.border.gov.au/Trav/Visa-1 for guidance on the visa options that may be most suitable for you.

Letter of Invitation if Required for Visas or Other Administrative Reasons

The Organising Committee can provide invitation letters to those who require it for visas or other necessary processes. However, this letter aims to only assist participants for their travel to Australia and does not imply any commitment for the Organising Committee to provide financial support. Please contact the Organising Committee as early as possible if you require an invitation.

Customs

Live animals and plants, plant material, animal products and certain food from overseas could introduce some of the world’s most damaging pests and diseases into Australia. This could devastate our valuable agriculture and tourism industries and unique environment.

The Department of Agriculture and Water Resources works with state and territory governments, industry and the community, to maintain Australia’s clean and wholesome food supply—at home and abroad. Australia’s biosecurity system protects our human, animal and plant health by reducing the risk of unwanted pests and diseases arriving in the country. We all benefit from a strong biosecurity system so we all have a role to play.

You will be given an Incoming Passenger Card before you arrive in Australia. You must comply with the requirement to provide this information. Giving false or misleading information is a serious offence.

You must mark YES on your card if you are carrying goods that may pose a biosecurity risk. These goods include plant material, animal products and certain food. A Department of Agriculture and Water Resources biosecurity officer may inspect declared goods during your border clearance.

IMPORTANT:
We recommend that applicants applying for a paper-based visa lodge their application at least 6-8 weeks before their intended travel date to Australia. All travellers to Australia must have a valid visa before boarding their plane. Travelers to Australia cannot apply for a visa on arrival.
